Gawaa Lundaa

Biography

Ganbold Lundaa, who signs his work as Gawaa, is a Mongolian-Australian contemporary artist whose practice bridges the vast landscapes of the Gobi Desert and the urban energy of Sydney. Born into a nomadic family in southwestern Mongolia, Gawaa’s early life herding animals across open steppes deeply informs his artistic vision. After moving to Australia, he studied fine arts in New South Wales and developed a multidisciplinary approach spanning painting, sculpture, installation, and land art.

His work explores identity, migration, and the meeting of traditional and modern worlds.

Through exhibitions across Mongolia, Australia, and Europe, he has become a key figure connecting Mongolian heritage with global contemporary art, using his art to reflect on belonging, memory, and the evolving meaning of home.

Beyond their personal practice, Gawaa also runs the Mongolian Artist Residency Studio (M.A.R.S.) in Tuv Province, Mongolia—a creative hub that fosters artistic exchange and cross-cultural dialogue between local and international artists.
